18th Week in Ordinary Time (A)
Deut. 6:4-13
Ps. 17:2-4,47,51
Mt. 17:14-20    (Ps Wk II)

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength” — how do you feel, when you hear this? Inspired?  Challenged?  Inspired because it resonates with something deep in your heart, that deep desire to love God with “all” your heart — soul — strength? Challenged because you feel it is almost impossible.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 known as the Shema (Hebrew word for  “Hear” — the first word for verse 4) is a Jewish confession of faith.  What can we learn from the Shema?  We can learn to “hear” — that there is only one God, there is no other.  We can learn to “love” this one God with all our heart — soul — strength, moment by moment.  We can learn to “write” God’s word in our heart, read-meditate-study-memorise. We can learn to “repeat” God’s word to our children — so that they too will “hear — love— write-repeat.”

What happens when we internalize God’s word?  It will show forth in our actions, in our reasoning, and in the way we live.  Our everyday life will witness — that we have truly heard this one God; that we really love this one God; that we have truly written God’s Word in our hearts; and that our family members too have heard from us and therefore have gone on to incarnate/flesh out the living word of God.

Lord, help us to live in such a way that Your Word will be made manifest in the world through our lives.   And help us to reverence You and serve You as You deserve.
